Surrey Border Film & Video Makers members meeting

Example of a club visit: Hollycombe Steam Museum

It was on a warm day in June that Surrey Border Film and Video Makers had an outing to the Hollycombe Steam Museum. For those who have never been, it is the home of a host of restored and preserved steam driven fairground equipment, all of which may be ridden on and filmed. There are three different-sized railways, a steam saw mill and various examples of farming in the past. To get the benefit of a group booking we all arranged to arrive at the opening time of 12 noon. There was a pleasant picnic area within the grounds which overlook the downs and we assembled there for lunch at 1pm. There was a snack bar for coffee etc. The proprietors, who are mostly unpaid volunteers, but gave permission for filming providing we kept to the public areas and didn't attempt fancy shots climbing up things or going the wrong side of barriers! The weather was kind to us with full sunshine all day.

This June day was warm and sunny, an ideal day for the large contingent from Surrey Border Film & Video Makers to start filming. Most were carrying pocket size mini DV camcorders but one member was seen lugging around an antique large size SVHS camcorder. How the technology has moved on!

The various filming groups came together for a picnic lunch and then set off again to complete their tasks. There was much filming going on all day and this resulted in an excellent number of films shown at later club meetings.

Here is a steam organ driven by a traction engine being captured on video. In the foreground the old SVHS camcorder is in use while closer to the traction engine is a hand held miniDV camcorder.

A close up is being taken here. All will be revealed when the film is shown at the August club meeting but perhaps this will be some close action shots cut to music.

No, it wasn't all filming. Quite a few members were seen as here on the merry-go-round, also the old fashioned sit-on-a-mat type helta skelta, the swings and the big wheel.
