Some of the club filmmaking activities

Surrey Border Film & Video Makers is very active in film making both as a club activity, in smaller groups and as individuals. There is almost always some project that is active. In December they hold an annual competition between members which is strongly supported.

Film about King John and the signing of the Magna Carta

One of the recent club projects was a film based on a plot about King John and the politics surrounding his being forced to sign the Magna Carter. On his way to the signing he visited Odiham Castle which is where most of the club filming took place. When seeking permission to film at the castle it was also learnt that the castle was about to be surrounded with scaffolding while it was made safe. This meant that the filming there had to be brought forward.

The film involves two children who are playing near the castle when they get sucked back in time to when King John was there ...

Filmmaking for Frimley Park Hospital children's ward directed by Jenny

Video club filming at Frimley hospital for a community film

The children's ward of the large NHS hospital at Frimley Park has a significant throughput of child patients. Entering hospital can be a very traumatic experience for a child and their parents and the hospital does all it can to put patients at ease. An aid to this is a booklet they hand to parents before a child arrives. This outlines the general arrangements and what to expect. Recently Surrey Border Film & Video Makers were asked to make a short video to supplement the booklet. A team, formed from volunteers from the club, spent two Sundays on an intensive filming exercise supported by the hospital staff. Filming covered everything from the children's ward to the journey to the anaesthetics room and then back from the recovery room and the discharge from hospital. Film to promote 'Keep Mobile'

A scene from the club Keep Mobile filmFilming for a community project called 'Keep Mobile' took place between August 2003 and September 2004 and is now complete and has been accepted with enthusiasm by the charity.

Film for the charity 'Hedgehogs'

A charity called Hedgehogs hold a fashion show every few years. On this occasion Surrey Border were asked to make a video of the show. We borrowed large professional pedestal cameras and set up a control room away from the main show. All four camera operators were in two way communication with the director and mixing was done live on the night. Around 15 members were involved and spent a number of days beforehand practicing all aspects. Everyone found the day of the show exhausting but very satisfying.

Film to promote the Frensham Ponds Sailability project

The Frensham Ponds Sailability project helps disabled people enjoy the challenges of sailing. The project was recently awarded £230,000 for its work with disabled people. The charity has been able to refurbish its facilities but is still in need of further funds and would like to contact more disabled people interested in sailing. The Surrey Border Film and Video Makers are helping by producing a film showing the work the charity does and the great benefits to all its recipients.   Selecting the new club projector

Early this year the projector which the club had used for many years developed a severe fault which would have been expensive to repair. Fortunately it had been anticipated that the projector might need replacing and so funds had been accumulated. A group of members experienced with projectors then went through those currently available and drew up a shortlist. Five from this list were obtained and set up in Four Marks Church Hall for a trial. The five, Philips PXG10, ASK C105, ASK C300, Sanyo PLCXU-35, Sony VPL-PX10 were all in the £3000 to £4500 price range and had outputs of at least 2000 lumens.

Three screens were arranged so that a careful comparison of the images could be made. Three of the projectors were rapidly eliminated leaving a close contest between the Sanyo and the Philips. The Philips was a heavier machine with quite reasonable sound output as well. The Sanyo was lighter, quieter but with poorer sound output. The images from both were exceptionally good. At a special general meeting in May the Sanyo was chosen and it is now in use at the club and for film shows to charities etc.

Here are some of the members all gazing at one of the three screens set up to compare the projectors.

Equipment to drive the video projector at a club meeting

The club has a variety of equipment to help the meetings run smoothly. This includes a club monitor, mixer, speakers and amplifier and most importantly the club projector.

The club visits local charities and other clubs to show club films with club equipment.

While the club projector was out of action and to fill in the gap before the new one was bought Peter generously lent his. The new club projector is now in full use and everyone is delighted with its performance.

The outing to Hollycombe Steam Museum for filmmaking and pleasure.

Filming at video club outing to the Steam Collection

In July 2002 the club outing was to the Hollycombe Steam Museum. The idea was to have an enjoyable day out complete with picnic while at the same time groups or individuals would endeavour to capture enough video material to make into an interesting film. Filming continued apace throughout the day but no-one was giving away what theme they had in mind and certainly just observing the various filmmakers in action gave little away. On the 2nd of August 2002 the results of the filming exercise will be shown to club members using the new club projector. For further details and more pictures click Filming at Hollycombe
