PRO May 2005 - The club is entertained by Circle 8
At the May meeting of Surrey Border Film & Video Makers a local club called Circle 8. They are a group of keen filmmakers from Guildford who have been working together for more than 40 years. Clearly dedicated to acting and entertaining the public, this group quickly impressed us with their professionalism. For the first half of the evening we were shown an entertaining film which the group had made about themselves. Among the fascinating tit bits which emerged was they have to obtain clearance for their films from the British Board of Film Classification before they can give public performances. This club has never given such public performances of its films and so has never faced this hurdle. One of their films was initially banned from public performance, although and yes, of course, it went on to win various awards in competitions. Here was an amateur group who didn’t
do things by halves. They even hired a helicopter for some of their shots. On one occasion, they had an audience of over 1000 in Guildford Civic Hall.
After a break for refreshments Circle 8 showed a whole series of films with a particularly memorable one about a teddy bear. Called Above and Beyond, it was narrated in couplets with still visuals of a teddy bear in various states of dress and in various situations. The narration was captivating and of such a quality that the audience was truly absorbed. The audience’s wrapped concentration showed what can be achieved through just perfect timing and exceptional narration. There was certainly a great deal in it and in the other films to stimulate our club towards filmmaking of ever higher standard.
