Surrey Border Film and Video Makers press report for April 2009
The main theme being the importance of the sound track
This is one of a series of reports which appeared regularly in the Farnham Herald. They report the filmmaking activities of camcorder bearing enthusiasts as they meet to see films and hear talks about film, video and tv film making.
It was a warm bright evening in April when Surrey Border Film & Video Makers gathered to look at the results
of a challenge thrown out to them at the March meeting. The challenge was to be given a short video with no
sound track and then add meaning and interest to it with their own sound. The identical video tapes were handed
out at the March meeting to everyone who opted to take part.
There were 13 entries! With audience numbers
swelled by several new members, the question in everyone’s minds was whether the different sound tracks would
provide enough stimulus to maintain interest across thirteen identical visuals. Fortunately the entries were all
so different that the 13 versions of the same visuals turned out to be fascinating, which forcefully
demonstrated the importance of music and sound effects for getting mood, pace and emotion across.

After a refreshment break the club was treated to a film by member, David Jackson, called Aerial Ballet. This was an
award winning film taken at the Farnborough air show a few years back. The combination of superb camera work and well
chosen music combined to give an awe-inspiring action film that was enthusiastically applauded. This was followed by a
wonderfully colourful film, full of fun, life and sunshine, of a continental market place by Vicky Jackson. Once again
excellent use of music maintained the interest throughout.
The evening ended with four more short films, two of
which were produced by groups within the club for sending to a competition shortly to be held in Chichester.
