Press report: October 2007
30 guests swelled our ranks for the October meeting of Surrey Border Film & Video Makers. These were mainly members of other clubs who had come clutching their latest films to show in competition. To ensure impartiality, Mike Coad, an outside judge had travelled from Orpington to adjudicate. The first film was a delightful romance by the South Downs club. Entitled “Amy’s Locket” it showed a pensioner who recognised a locket that brought back memories of a childhood sweetheart. Convinced that it was she and allowing free rein to his memories, the film showed numerous superb and skilfully done flashbacks to the ‘old times’. The end was a completely unexpected twist that shattered the rekindling romance. The club from Spring Park entered a comedy called “Flat Out”. This was a superbly filmed very funny script showing a car parked with its tyre on a £50 note. Conveniently the car was parked just outside a tea room which quickly filled with customers more intent on waiting for the car to drive off than any real wish for refreshments. The film was beautifully acted with great facial expressions and body language saying more than dialogue. The Chichester club was last year’s winner and it had a cracking film called “Buried Alive”. It was based on the Twin Towers disaster and showed a fireman trapped in the rubble of a collapsed building. Use had been made of a genuine collapsed building with medical and safety personnel on hand as well as the local fire brigade. The film was a truly gripping epic and was very professionally performed and filmed. Then last, but not least, was “X-9 Freedom” from the Reading club. This was part documentary, part advert, and promoted the camaraderie of motor bike riding along with the great feeling of freedom that a bike gives. All films were of such a high standard that the task of declaring a winner from amongst them was not an enviable one. Mike Coad, the film critic and adjudicator made deep and insightful comments on each film and then declared “Amy’s Locket” as the best. |
