Press report: September 2007
There was a buzz of excitement as members of Surrey Border Film & Video Makers met for a session on a special film technique called ‘chroma key’. They were about to learn the secrets of making someone appear in a film when they hadn’t actually been anywhere near where the film was shot. The technique is one that we all see in TV weather forecasts but it has far wider application in film making generally. After an introduction, backgrounds were made available for members to appear in a range of locations such as 10 Downing Street, mountains and even outer space. The most popular was 10 Downing Street with members making all sorts of highly agreeable announcements! Oh if only our members were the chancellor! There followed some examples of members’ films which demonstrated the technique, including the club’s publicity officer realistically climbing into a match box and another member apparently riding a broomstick in the sky! A flood of excited questions resulted as members realised the range of impossible situations that could be created. Harry Potter’s cloak of invisibility is just one of them. After a refreshment break, the club saw a film premiere by WriteAngle, an active club group which makes several films each year. The plot centred on a wayward man who had deceived three women and run off with their money. They then tried to get their own back by planning to blow him up, but unfortunately for them he escaped the blast and drove off in the Ferrari of his latest young conquest. The evening ended with edited film highlights of a day’s social held at the Tilford Rural Life Centre. |
