At their September meeting Surrey Border Film & Video Makers were entertained by an active filmmaking group from within their membership. The WriteAngle group introduced a selection of the numerous and fascinating films they had made over the past eleven years, ranging from the serious in the form of a documentary about a nearby cardiac rehabilitation centre to the hilarious in a film called Dead in Bed. Also included was a short film showing men from the group floating up into the clouds in an after-death experience. They were seen talking to St Peter, who was reluctant to let them through the pearly gates into heaven. They each had to pass a test, and - as is to be expected from this sort of film - one failed amid a blaze of pyrotechnics and roars of laugher from the audience. After a refreshment break, Club Member (and twice Club Chairman) David Jackson enthralled with a demonstration of the principles of video editing on computer. The example he used was the making of a DVD for the Basingstoke Canal Society to help it to raise funds and raise awareness of the Society. His end result was expertly extracted from 12 hours of uncoordinated shooting by three cameras of a recent Basingstoke Canal Festival. David’s explanations made the task look deceptively simple and yet isn’t this what always happens when a master demonstrates his skill! |
