This Summer, Surrey Border Film & Video Makers tried a new venture. They combined filmmaking with a garden party. The venue was a large country estate just outside Alton, kindly made available by one of the members. The plot for the film was the friendly rivalry between two video clubs, which later turned into something more sinister. The plot was written by club member, Margaret Firmston, and actors came from the club itself and from a local amateur dramatic group with whom the club had previously collaborated. The filming was spread across four teams. There was plenty of action and intrigue. Bottles marked ‘poison’ and a powder being poured into a mug of coffee quickly signalled the first of a number of murders. Was the most dramatic scene the body falling from the roof? Or was it the house burning down? Or was it the frenzied shooting so brilliant acted by one of our members? To find out, we will have to wait for the premiere in the Autumn. Alongside the filming was a continuous supply of drinks and food, from breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea, dinner and supper, plus mid-meal snacks. For those not directly involved in the filming, croquet, badminton, yoga and tours round the 40 acre estate were laid on. The fun laden activity lasted from early morning till nearly midnight. The weather was kind, and altogether it was a truly memorable event. |
