For its May meeting, Surrey Border Film & Video Makers invited guests with specialisms in acting, in particular members from The Alton Fringe. The idea was for the actors and we film-makers to see what we could all learn from one another and whether there might be opportunities for us to work together. To this end the evening began with a short introductory input by the club. The idea was then that the first half of the evening should be given over to the actors and the second half to the club. For the introduction, the club showed a short series of clips from a film currently being made by the club for the charity Keep Mobile. Members of the Alton Fringe then told us about themselves. We learnt that they are a group of around twelve independent actors, often confused with but unconnected with the Alton Amateur Dramatic Society. They then gave a practical demonstration of their excellent talents with two extracts from their previous plays. This produced much discussion. Sadly, as far as the club was concerned, our guests then told us of their deep reservations about having their work preserved for posterity on film and video. So, much as we had enjoyed their input, our hopes of working together were dashed. The club continues to work with other acting groups and remains keen to work with any who are interested in acting for film and video. By so doing, we expect our combined output to give widespread pleasure, especially in those many homes for the elderly which the club supports by giving regular film shows. |
